The European Commission published the energy label Regulation on washer dryers in 1996. All washer dryers put on the market from August 1997 must bear the energy label.
In 2014, the Commission launched a prepartory study to re-assess the energy labelling and to evaluate the possibility to set ecodesign requirements on washer dryers. This study is still ongoing and is being carried out by the Joint Research Center.

In November 2016, CECED organized a Workshop on how to improve testing methods for washing machines and washer-dryers in the context of the revision of Ecodesign and energy labelling regulations. 47 participants joined the Workshop, representing consumer associations, environmental NGOs, energy and market surveillance authorities, EU Commission, consultants, several European testing laboratories, as well as CECED direct and non-direct members. The final report of the meeting is available for download below as well as related annexes.
