Policy Areas

Ecodesign Framework Directive

The Ecodesign Framework Directive was adopted in 2005 and recast in 2009.

The Directive provides for an integrated framework wherein mandatory requirements (especially on energy consumption) are set on energy-related appliances. It allows for the development of product measures that prescribe specific and generic requirements.

The Directive requires that the functionality, the safety and the overall quality of the product cannot decrease due to these requirements.

The Least Life Cycle Cost, which is used to identify the levels for the minimum requirements, enables consumers to enjoy a return on their investments.
