Providing a voice for the home appliance industry in Europe – the European Committee of Domestic Equipment Manufacturers

Washing Machines

The current ecodesign regulation for washing machines was published in 2010. The first set of ecodesign requirements applied from 1st June 2011.

An energy label regulation has also been published in 2010 and requires manufacturers to provide an energy label for appliances sold in the European Union. This regulation repealed Directive 95/12/EC.

In accordance with Art. 7 of these regulations, the Commission launched in 2014 a prepartory study to re-assess the ecodesign requirements and the energy labelling. This study is still ongoing and is being carried out by the Joint Research Center.

Related European legislation:

In November 2016, CECED organized a Workshop on how to improve testing methods for washing machines and washer-dryers in the context of the revision of Ecodesign and energy labelling regulations. 47 participants joined the Workshop, representing consumer associations, environmental NGOs, energy and market surveillance authorities, EU Commission, consultants, several European testing laboratories, as well as CECED direct and non-direct members. The final report of the meeting is available for download below as well as related annexes.
